Indonesia the Biggest Fish Producer in the World by 2015

Indonesia is targeting to become the biggest fish producer in the world by 2015.

The Director General of Business and Investment of the Department of Fisheries and Maritime, Viktor Nikijulu, said he is optimistic that the target will be realized with the development of fish products in Indonesia.

“The first thing that must be improved is the fishing infrastructure and facilities owned by fishermen,” he said when visiting Gorontalo, last Saturday.

If infrastructure and fishermen’s conditions can be improved, he said, it is not impossible if this supports the fishing product’s quantity and quality.

Victor said that they are exploring markets in the Middle East and Africa with processed fish products.

According to him, if Indonesia does not change its strategy, they could lose out to Vietnam, a newcomer in the business.

“We should change the products into something with added value to make them sell well in the world market,” he said.
